Being cool isn't getting any easier.. Yesterday's dorks turn into today's hipsters!!

It started about a year ago: People walked around campus and other social venues wearing t-shirts enticing you to "embrace your inner Geek." Then it spread to television, with larger than life celebrities declaring themselves a "Movie Geek" or a "Computer Nerd."

Now it's spread into the mainstream. Almost everybody is a geek, a nerd or a dork of some sort; whether it's movies, technology or just a general, run of the mill hipness.

When did it become so cool to be uncool? When did anybody with a passing interest in computers become a computer nerd? And why do people who got to Blockbuster every weekend refer to themselves as the resident movie geek in their circle of friends?

It used to be that geeks, nerds and the like were social outcasts, relegated to their parents' basements to plot the destruction of the world and compile lists of hated people who gave them wedgies in high school after gym class.

Now there are whole styles of coolness dedicated to losers. People with thick glasses, unkempt hair and a large cell phone are "nerd chic." They are the leaders of civilization. Women want them and former high school jocks want to be them.

It would seem that the way to a woman's heart (or a man's heart, depending upon your gender and sexual orientation) is to loudly proclaim your love of Japanese animation and your ability to program in both C+ and Visual Basic.

Which begs the question, is it now to cool to be uncool? If so, what are the current definitions of both cool and uncool? Is uncool cool and cool uncool, or are social distinctions such as these no longer a relevant issue?

How do we avoid the confusion inherent in such questions?

With the advent of the Internet, societal trends move at the speed of light. Yesterday's bellbottoms are tomorrow's Armani suits, and a combination of thick glasses and ill-fitting clothes are the mark of a person on the cusp of greatness.

The good, old-fashioned nerd no longer has a social label under which he or she can rally support. True nerds have been kicked out of their self-prescribed umbrella, forced to wander the social landscape in search of another moniker; one that is either more or less cool, depending upon what is hip at the moment.

Or maybe not. Maybe society has evolved beyond the point at which we need to label certain trends as "good" and others as "bad." Maybe we've finally made it to that utopian playground where good exists in all that surrounds us and we don't have to dunk somebody's head in the toilet for wearing the wrong brand of shoes.

Maybe coolness is just a state of being; that karmic existence where your worth as a person is defined by self-confidence and joie de vie. Clothing doesn't matter. Your love of cheesy '80s cartoons and punk music doesn't matter either. What matters is that you are at peace with who you are.

Or maybe this is just another of society's cruel tricks. Maybe cool really is uncool and vice versa. And maybe by the strange semantic shift, the ones who get lost in the mix are the true losers of society.
Who knows? Certainly not me.
I guess I'm just not cool enough... lol.. ;D

Mumbai Molestation: Are we living in a Civilized World?

I seriously don't know where the civilized world's headed? Are we draining ourselves in the sea of those filthy uncivilized Barbarians, who ultimately ended up destroying themselves? At this point I am short of words... completely down with life... loosing hope... ashamed to call myself part of this system... INDIA GATE.. New Year's Eve... Crowd of around 1700+ people (Bloody Eunuchs I should say)... Perverts of about 60 in number.... 1 Victim... What the HELL were those 1700+ people doing??? Enjoying the show...??? Even worst... there were about 70 Police guys Patrolling that night.. N best part is the excuse they give "No actions have been taken, as there was no formal FIR registered" Bloody My foot I say... My Foot... I don know whom should I blame.... the system... the perverts... the police.. or the crowd???

Am just down with life... disappointed to the core... I really don' know how to react as Am angry and burning like fire inside, Am sad to see n hear what has happened, Am insecure to think that this can happen to anyone of us... ANYONE!!!... DOES EVERYONE HEAR ME?? OR AGAIN HAVE YOU TURNED DEAF LIKE YOU TURNED BLIND, WHEN THAT GIRL WAS MOLESTED??... SIGH!!... Today is the day I say "Am ashamed to be an Indian".

God, Save the world, if cant then you too go to hell.... 'coz IF IT IS TO BE, IT IS TO BE ME... I shall have the last laugh... :(

However my question to you all readers is...
If you are in the crowd and see this happening....what would you do ?
Would you stick your neck out and try to protect the woman ? This at the risk of losing limb and life at the hands of an irate mob ?
Or would you try to record the incident on your cell and hope that it can be used to nab the culprits ?
And finally, if the culprits are nabbed, what is the proper punishment for them.
I personally think that the few in the crowd who resort to such antics should be beaten up by the majority of the bystanders. Public beating and breaking a few bones will do them good for a lifetime.
And if the public does not do its duty, then medically castrate them. That would solve a problem for a lifetime.
OK, the last suggestion is off the top, but that's just because I am so f#$%ing angry at the series of incidents happening in my own country.

5 detained in Mumbai molestation case

Mumbai: The Mumbai Police have detained five persons for questioning and identification in the New Year molestation case at the Gateway of India.
All five belong to the Ghatkopar area in the eastern suburbs of the city. However, what is surprising is that no case has been lodged so far.
The Mumbai Police had said on Wednesday that they would take suo motu action against New Year party revellers who molested a young woman at the Gateway of India on December 31.

Police till late Wednesday evening had claimed that they could order a probe only if somebody filed a complaint.
“I appeal to the general public to come forward if they have any information about the incident or the miscreants as no formal complaint has been registered with us," Mumbai Police Commissioner A N Roy had said.
The girl was molested by nearly 70 drunk revellers in full public view. Her clothes were torn apart even as her male friend was manhandled.
A Mid-Day photographer, Shadab Khan recalls - who saw the whole incident from a police watchtower and captured it on his camera recalls that the couple was surrounded by around 70 men, who tore apart the woman's clothes, while her friend tried to protect her - in vain.
The horror continued for almost 10 minutes before the terrorised couple managed to extricate themselves from the crowd and make a run for it.

‘Spare Orkut as WE are adults’

Why are we always complaining against Orkut? After all we are adults and should make our decisions maturely. If one has joined Orkut then he should have known its ways too.

I CAME ACROSS an article that says a person deleted his Orkut account because someone had put an offensive remark in his account scrap. Is running away the solution to such problems?
Variety is the spice of life. “Offensive material” is a very subjective term. If one has to rank on the scale of 1-10, some may not find it offensive at all and say that it is a part of life. If one surfs through Orkut, he will find some communities that are full of very offensive adult material including pictures and discussions about sex. You can also find nymphomaniacs, dirty sex stories, and all one can think off.

I do agree one should be very refined in his/her conversations but I do not agree that one should stop or censor Orkut. It is an open community for all. It has various communities to join. Join whichever you like and leave the rest as it is for the others rather then cursing or trying to censor them. If you have read the terms and conditions of Orkut then you have agreed that you are an adult. So, face the world and stop hiding in yours mama’s lap.

Moreover, we live in a world where people tease you while walking down the street. Does that mean you need to fly to Mars. No one will be there 24/7 to be your guardian in this world; one will have to be his/her own guardian. Accept it and be strong to face the real world. Life is not a bed of roses; it comes along with thorns.

Many will not anticipate my opinion but try to see this world in the real form rather than expecting someone to monitor it for you. I also want this world to be a better place to live in and that clean thoughts prevail.

Noida Horror - The escalating threat of Paedophiles

Sexual abuse of children is a bitter reality. The Noida horror is a grim reminder of this disgusting evil practice. Parents, teachers and mass media must share prime responsibilities to eradicate this evil from our society.

WHAT HAPPENED IN Nithari, Noida will surely haunt the psyche of the nation for quite sometime. It is horrible, disgusting, and tormenting, even to think of the evil spirit that has descended on this earth. Words cannot describe the vileness of the tragedy.

A paedophile, assisted by another abominable creature, lured children from his neighbourhood for more than two years. Together they abused them, mutilated their bodies and then casually got rid off the remains in their own backyard. Poor, innocent children disappeared from the village at an alarming frequency. The irresponsible police, as is obvious, treated the complaints with callous disregard, which they often reserve for the poor and helpless. In the meanwhile, the devils went on abusing and killing the innocent victims, one after another, without giving a damn to the 38 innocent lives they took.

It is outrageous to believe that the unconcerned police never deemed it fit to act on the complaints of the parents or even register an FIR. Instead, they encouraged the two depraved men to continue with their acts of criminal perversion by not taking any action for more than two years. Equally surprising is the fact that no one in the vicinity noticed anything suspicious. This clearly shows the apathy and values, which characterise our daily lives.

It is true that the two accused, an industrialist and his servant, are not the first paedophiles we have heard of or read about. Also, it is not the first reported case of serial killings in human history. However, the laxity and negligence on the part of the police and the administration, the aloofness of the society or one’s own neighbourhood, and the barbarity of the crime are disconcerting and demoralizing.

Of all the crimes committed against children, paedophilia is the worst, as it leaves the abused children physically and mentally battered for the rest of their lives. The number of surveys and data available on the subject suggest that paedophilia is more common than most people know or can think of.

A paedophile, usually a male, could be anybody - a relative, a neighbour, a teacher, or a servant. The proximity provides an easy access to the victim. A paedophile, in some cases can be a stranger, like the accused in the Nithari incident, who uses enticements, such as chocolates, to lure children into his trap.

Psychologists treat paedophilia as an addiction rather than a mental illness. There are not much in-depth case studies on the topic, as most of the abused children never gather the courage to come out in the open against the perpetrators; or in many cases the family chooses to hush up the matter to avoid further embarrassment and trauma to the child as well the family. And, more often than not, if the paedophile happens to be from the family, the incident is given a quiet burial. Some of the available material include Indian author Pinky Virani’s book Bitter Chocolate, which discusses the prevalence of this crime against children in our society.

It is important to discuss how in future we can shield our children from paedophiles. There are laws. In the year 2003, the then Goan government enacted a comprehensive piece of legislation to put an end to the exploitation of children under 18 years of age, and to save the unsuspecting children from the paedophile ring.

Even though the law may act as a deterrent against child abuse, it may not be sufficient, as every case of child abuse may not be taken to court. There is a need for educating the children at an early age about possible attempts usually made by paedophiles. The parents are in a relatively better position to educate the children in this regard. Teachers also can prove very helpful. Educational institutions, government bodies, and voluntary organisations may further facilitate by spreading awareness about this evil practice among the least literate sections of the society.

The challenge before us, the parents, is to make our children aware of the presence of shady characters in society, and of their wiles and deviousness.

Children usually see things in black and white. For them it is not easy to make out the right and wrong. They are not mature enough to see the shades in between. The challenge is to make them aware of the presence of bad people, who would pretend to be friendly only to take advantage of their (children’s) innocence, gullibility, and vulnerability.

And, we have to do it without tinkering the innocence of the children, lest the child would end up suspecting everyone and everything. It is not an easy task. Who says parenting in modern times is an easy job?

Why Fuss about ORKUT?

The noise over Orkut only exposes the hypocrisy of the noise-makers. They miss the point that it is a new-age networking technology. And like always, potent technologies will change life and values. You can’t stop it.

THIS IS IN defence of Orkut, which has been facing flak for its misuse by the users. Hey, come on stop now! What is Orkut? Isn’t it just a technology that allows you to network — freely? It’s just that. Nothing more or less. How it’s used is entirely the user’s prerogative.
If somebody is morally so offended, the best option for the person is to stop using it. Who is forcing anybody? Orkut certainly is not only for the moral daddy’s. What one doesn’t like, others may like. It’s their choice. If you can’t handle the technology, then bloody don’t use it. No one forces anyone to post personal profile on orkut. If someone posts his/her personal information, that is because the person wants everyone to know about him/her. I don’t see anything wrong here even if there is a bit of exhibitionism here. Because it’s willing and harmless, who are others to take offence? If you do not like, mind your own business and switch off — without spoiling the happiness of others. Who, in any case, are you to set moral standards? Let the users decide what they want. Leave the users alone; they will sort it out.

Like with any technology, it, too, can certainly be misused. Yes, it’s right what some guys have done is really pathetic. I can give names of at least 30 Orkut users who have done the same thing — posted their profile with picture of some of their good-looking friends and incidentally all of them are girls. There are also some desperate women who have done the same. If I am sounding like a male chauvinist, then so be it. But the fact is, this is what happens. Whatever, Orkut cannot be blamed and no efforts should be made to censure it. It has provided the tools to a user to either make it visible to everybody, select friends or to no one but self. The freedom of choice is inbuilt. The user decides how to use it, not Orkut. And there are all kinds of people. And they will remain always — with or without Orkut.

Regarding the photographs, I want to remind those who needlessly object about the times we live in. It’s the age of high technology. And, we all know technology changes life and values. It’s bound to happen with newer and more potent personal technologies. Nobody can stop it. Today, anyone carries a camera phone, which makes it so very easy to get the photographs one wants and post them, including those of good-looking girls, who later discover they have been secretly clicked by someone at a public place. So what should be done about it? Ban the camera phones?? What about the security cams at malls or airports and in offices??? And, if someone does not know, then I take this opportunity to inform just something as small as a car registeration plate is more than enough to get all the personal information of anyone. So what should be done about it????

I think all this hue and cry against Orkut not being safe is just too much of gibberish. Frankly, some people should think less and should not have any misconceptions in life and, above all, try to be more positive. The most funny aspect of all this is that it is Orkut that is being used to spread the message that Orkut is not safe!

Come to me when someone gets raped or killed because of Orkut. Till then shutup. It’s all a nonsense. There are more crimes happening without such networkings. Go and stop them first. Was Jessica Lal murdered because somebody had found her to be too hot on Orkut? Nonsense. You will hear more of these moral qualms from the hypocrites.

A TEMPORARY staffing company, Teamlease, is all set to become the country's largest private sector employer with 1 lakh people on its rolls by March 31, 2007. In the process, it would overtake India's largest software exporter, TCS, in terms of manpower strength. The IT major, till now the largest employer, has over 80,000 employees and is expected to add about 15,000 over the next 90 days.

Infosys, which proposes to take its staff strength up to 95,000 by March, too could tie with TCS as the second largest employer in the country. The Tata group, as a whole, employs just over 2 lakh people, 40% of which are in TCS. On the other hand, the AV Birla group as a whole has around 82,000 in its 37 companies. IBM India, meanwhile , has about 50,000 employees at present and is hiring at 1,000 per month.

Te a m l e a s e , which has over 60,000 employees, has client orders of 45,000 to be completed by March 31. If it does achieve this, it will have over 100,000 staff on its rolls, becoming the largest private sector employer in India. Teamlease , which meets the temporary manpower requirements of its clients, who are over 300, might become the largest employer but in terms of revenues it is still small.

Teamlease's turnover is about Rs 700 crore while that of TCS is over Rs 14,000 crore. Globally temporary staffing companies do have large manpower strengths as they meet the staffing requirements of a large number of their clients. "We are ramping up fast. At our 23 locations across India , we are hiring about 500-600 per day with an average of 16,000 new employees per month. We are doubling the number of recruiters to 300 this month and are on track to beat TCS," says Rituparna Chakraborty, v-p , Teamlease.

When contacted by ET, here's what a TCS spokesman had to say: "We are about 80,000 currently and are hiring continuously. We had announced a target to hire about 30,000 employees in fiscal 2006-07 , half of which we have already achieved." Most corporate biggies such as the Tatas, AV Birla group, Reliance ADAG, Bharti and RIL have big hiring plans for 2007 but none are willing to disclose them yet. Most of them, especially in the retail and IT spheres, fear rivals will lap up the available talent. Others ET spoke to chose to remain silent, because of the onset of quarterly results this month.
